The northwest: mountains, cacti and altitude sickness
We are now in Chicoana, a tiny and very tranquilo village some 50kms from Salta, to recover from altitude sickness from our crazy excursion the other day: 700kms in 15hrs, on dirt track roads up and down the Andes (we went up to 4,180m but most of the time up and down between 2,000 and 3,700) to see the subtropical forest, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, the saltflats and the altiplano... The region of Salta supposedly has 32 micro climates, and enough different coloured mountains to keep us busy with the cameras the whole day!

Quebrada de Humahuaca, 2,200 m above the sea

Salinas Grandes, 3,600m above the sea
An amazing day, but we have been very tired ever since (and so is the local computer, so more pics some other day). The last couple of days have been spent at the very cosy inn of the village, where we have been making friends with the pets and the kids playing in the pool who like to practice their English on us ("hello, how are you?" on repeat for hours on end, then hysterical giggles). We are the only guests, and they must think we are very lazy... two days spent in the deckchairs, in half shade (ca 30 degrees). Anna has been enjoying "Puras mentiras" by Juan Forn (recommended!) and Lotta has not been enjoying "Verkan" by Torbjorn Flygt, but hey it's better than studying!
Tomorrow we'll be a bit more adventurous, with a trek on horseback up through the subtropical forest that surrounds the village, complete with stops for a swim at some waterfalls, and bbq and wine and siesta in the shade at lunch.
Check you later, now is time for food.
